Peskov says Russia to continue AI progress, regulation needed

MOSCOW, Mar 29 (PRIME) -- Russia will continue to develop artificial intelligence (AI), but the technologies need regulation, the president’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Wednesday.

“President (Vladimir Putin) has repeatedly spoken about the importance of this direction of work and the necessity of continuing this work to avoid lagging of Russia behind the global level of the countries that are ahead of the race. The work will keep going,” Peskov said.

“As to the point of view of those who believe that the progress of artificial intelligence hide serious threats, you know, any medicine turns into poison if taken improperly,” he added.

Elon Musk and a group of experts earlier posted an open letter on the website of organization Future of Life called “Pause Giant AI Experiments,” in which they “call on all AI labs to immediately pause for at least six months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4.”

Peskov said that work on the AI development should continue, but regulation will be needed.
